GREENVILLE, NC (April 1, 2021) – Hardee, Massey & Blodgett, LLP, a personal injury law firm in Greenville, NC, is pleased to sponsor WITN’s Distracted Driving Awareness Month Campaign.

Distracted driving has become a deadly epidemic on our roadways. Although texting and driving is the highest on the endless list of distractions, other dangerous actions while driving include talking — whether that be on a cell phone or to others in the car – eating or drinking, setting your navigation, adjusting the radio, applying makeup, and more. During Distracted Driving Awareness Month, Hardee, Massey & Blodgett encourages all drivers, young and old, to help make roadways and people safer by committing to driving distraction-free by taking the National Safety County Just Drive Pledge.

“Unfortunately, in the practice of personal injury law, we see how the results of distracted driving accidents affect our clients every day,” states Kyle Blodgett, Partner at Hardee, Massey & Blodgett. “We are proud to sponsor WITN’s Distracted Driving Awareness Month campaign in an effort to make eastern North Carolina more aware of its dangers during the month of April.”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 3,142 people lost their lives as a result of distracted driving in 2019, which is a 10% increase over 2018. Statistics show that young drivers are more apt to use their cell phones while driving, but make no mistake, other age groups are also driving distracted and are close behind.

“Traffic dropped significantly during COVID-19, but our roadways continue to become more and more dangerous,” notes Brack Massey, Partner at Hardee, Massey & Blodgett, “More than 700 people are injured every day in distracted driving accidents according to the National Safety Council. When someone chooses to drive distracted, they rob themselves of valuable seconds that could be needed to avoid a close or deadly car crash.”

During the month of April, organizations such as the NHTSA, National Safety Council, and encourage drivers to take responsibility for their choices when driving and to follow safety tips such as pulling over and parking before placing a call or text; do not scroll through apps or social media accounts while driving; and, if you must have access to your phone, designate a passenger to respond to message or calls.
